Planning for 2012-2013

Carson-Dellosa Items

Name Tags

A student teacher brought an educational supply catalog to me today to ask about a couple of items. When she showed me the owl border, I knew I had to have it. :) I'm usually not a fan of pre-made things, but I LOVE these! Plus, they match my room, AND I can use them to accent my anchor charts. I'm not sure I have room for the tree, but I can use the smaller items ...

Of course, I'm JUSTIFYING because I bought them today. :-)

I plan to have my boards finished for next year before this year's over because I start each year with material, borders, and titles. That's it! The rest is added as I teach. (Check out the page that has a video of my classroom for pictures of what my room looked like at the beginning of this year. The owl border is going to replace the dots.)

I've filled in all the dates in my lesson-plan book for 2012-2013. I know I should format them on the computer, but I actually enjoy writing them down in colored pens. :-) The ones below are my favorite, and Wal-mart sells them for less than $1.50 a bag.

I also have my assessment folder ready with curriculum cards and quick-check forms already copied. Call me Type A, but when school is over, I can rest easy that I'm all ready for next year.

When my youngest son, now 17, was little he said, "My daddy likes his job, but not as much as my mommy." I LOVE teaching and everything about it. It's wonderful to get paid for something I enjoy doing.

ELA Weekly Check-Up

Each week, I give a check-up similar to this for a grade. Initially, many students fail the friendly-letter portion. I tell them not to worry because they'll get to rewrite it CORRECTLY for points. Once they realize they're being held accountable for learning, their grades improve remarkably. This year, most of my students scored at least 80% or higher by the second month of school.

Parts of Speech:

I teach parts of speech a few minutes each day until students have mastered them which is generally around the 2nd or 3rd month of school. (There is a document in my store explaining this and pre-made PowerPoints available too.)

We also do Writer's Workshop each day. I collect a couple of published pieces each quarter for grades.

With that being said, I need English grades. These weekly quizzes assess conventions and parts of speech.

My goal is to create monthly bundles to sell for $1 each if there's enough interest. They're easy to create if you want to create your own. Let me know if you have questions.

P.S. I uploaded a Microsoft Word version so you can modify the letter to fit the needs of your class. A PDF is included too. :)

Writing PD Opportunity July 30 or 31 in Nixa, MO

If you're like me, your summer calendar is filling up quickly. If you're local, you might be interested in attending the Back-to-School PD I do for Nixa.  They charge a fee for this (unless you're a Nixa employee), but it's not that much. If I remember correctly, it's not more than $50 a day.

I'm planning to present a day on Writer's Workshop for 2nd-6th grade and maybe a day on Brain or Differentiated Instruction or ???. They're still working on the details. Registration is not open yet, but I thought I'd extend an invitation in case you're interested. I'll post a comment to this when I know more.

I'm planning to have lots of lessons ready-to-go for the Writer's Workshop session.

2012-2013 Planning Template Download

I'm working on next year's curriculum and thought I'd share the planning document I made. The dates reflect the schedule in my district, but you can easily modify this to fit your needs. Let me know if you have questions. :-)

4th Grade Tangled Spelling Words -- Free Downloads

My students LOVE Tangled Tuesday, and we play it each week. However, this year, I scrambled to make them on Monday evenings or Tuesday mornings, and I am the worst at keeping them organized. It seems like my list of things to do gets longer with each passing day and organizing computer files never seems to get done.

So, I am re-making ALL of them for next year and organizing them in a file. So far, I have the first 11 weeks drafted.  I'm sure there are mistakes because I am making them quickly, but I'll check them when I'm finished. With that being said, you are welcome to join my shared Dropbox folder and use them too. --- just know there will probably be mistakes early on and they need to be proofed.

If you would like to join this 4th grade shared folder, post your email address and I'll add you. Once you join, click 'SAVE AS' to save each file on your computer. If you take them out of the folder, there's a chance they'll be permanently removed from the folder.  Each file includes ten spelling words and five transfer words.

I can't upload animated SMARTBoard lessons to my Teachers Pay Teachers store due to copyright, but I can share them for free. :)
